Four.

Okay, so I’m adding a goal to my list. Save money. To that end, I have started collecting coupons and saving them in an old photo album I don’t use anymore. Maybe another goal that I should add is organizing my photos. But let’s not get too hasty. I need a goal for 2011.

I ventured out this evening to “spend” my coupons that I’ve saved on baby junk. I am quite proud of the fact that I only purchased items for which I received a coupon. You know what that means? Gold star on the 2010 goals! Woohoo! All of this started when I received the ever elusive Similac coupon from one of Nate’s coworkers. Plus, I’ve always kept coupons, but I just never use them. I hope I’m not becoming one of those creepy housewives. You’d tell me, right?

So, on the weight loss goal. I haven’t lost a pound. However, I did do a 15 minute abs workout on ExerciseTV OnDemand this morning. I think I should get at least a silver star for that. Oh, and I have not had a sugary soda today. I do, however, have a diet Red Bull directly to my left. At least it’s not a regular Red Bull, right?

I don’t have a lot of other exciting news for you. I need to get going on my reading challenge or 18 months will be over and I’ll have 1 book to show for it. Well, on that note, off to read. Bye now!

New Year…Day 3

Do energy drinks count as sugary soda? Yes. Darn. Well, then yesterday was a bust on that front. I only had one. Does that make it better? I suppose I should be pleased that the holiday season is over and I haven’t gained a pound. Nate has lost seven. Ridiculous. And last night, cooking devolved into pizza rolls and chocolate milk. Alas. I’m not giving up, though.

Day 3 of January and the last day that Nate will be home with Fynn and I. It is also the last day that I can slack on my work. Back to it tomorrow. Well, I should say back to it this afternoon.

January and February are no fun on the Nate travelling front. He is leaving for Vegas this Thursday through Sunday and then he’ll be home a week and then off to Orlando for seven days. Then in Feburary, he is going to Dubai and Bahrain for 15 days. At least the travelling slows down for a little while after that.

Despite many of my friends’ facebook posts to the contrary, I think I’ve been having a great 2010. I mean, it’s only day 3. The new year has so much potential. I love that. We’ll see how much I love it in 6 months. 🙂

Day 1 – New Year “Goals”

Welcome 2010! I’m already off to a slow start with my goals (I’ve recently finished sugary soda #2 for the day). I did master a Martha Stewart recipe last evening. I made herb roasted chicken with shallots and baked potatoes. I have to say that with a small change to the recipe (I used 6 shallots when the recipe called for 16 – which seemed like a lot and was particularly expensive), it turned out really well. So I guess that I can actually read a recipe. It wasn’t one of Martha’s ridiculous recipes, trust me she does have some of them in there, but it was very tasty. I just sent Nate off to the grocery store so I can attempt recipe numero dos – orange-soy pork chops and sauteed green beans. Stay tuned.

Besides the obvious sugary soda slip up, I haven’t exactly worked on my other two goals. Although, I am writing a blog and I suppose I did work on a press release today so I did write more. I have to pick up my first book of the challenge to prove I’ve read more. I also haven’t weighed myself today. I think that would be a depressing thing to do on New Year’s Day. I’ll give that one a go tomorrow. Please forgive me if I don’t divulge my weight on the blog. I don’t think I’m that brave.

Not Your Average Book Club

I’m going to tell you my little secret. It’s a dirty little secret that only my husband knows. I’m so ashamed to say it. Last year, I only read two books. TWO. And one of those books was What to Expect When You’re Expecting and the other was Double Cross by James Patterson. It’s embarrassing. Ridiculous. Shameful. Humiliating. For those of you who don’t know me personally, I’m making this confession because I have a bachelor’s degree in English. Not only that, I have a master’s degree in British and American literature. Something has to be done. Something drastic.

At first I thought about pulling out my master’s exam list and reading my way through the books I should have read in graduate school. Unfortunately, I cannot bring myself to read Jane Eyre or Frankenstein for the hundredth time. So I decided on something a little more manageable. A little more…already organized for me.

Goal: Read all 77 National Book Award fiction winners. What better way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the National Book Award? The National Book Foundation did blog about each of the books http://www.nbafictionblog.org/ (so a great resource as I go through them).

Timeline: 18 months (roughly 4 books per month)

Challenge: To all of you readers out there. Check out the fiction blog for the list of past winners.

I’m beginning with the first book to ever win the award – Nelson Algren’s The Man with the Golden Arm

READY, SET, GO!

2010…here I come

2010 is just around the corner. It will have been 10 years since I graduated from college, 9 since Nate and I were married, and little Fynn will be 1. Already, it is shaping up to be a big year. 2010 just sounds momentous.

While I’m not so sure that it will actually be momentous, I think that it is about time that I actually follow through on some of the goals (not calling them resolutions this year…since resolutions are easily broken). I think I’ll make a list for myself here and we’ll see how far I get on each of these.

1. Lose 20 lbs. Okay, okay. Every time I tell my friends I need to lose 20 lbs. they freak. “Do you need to lose that much.” Without divulging every detail of my life on the internet. Yes, I do need to lose 20 lbs.

2. Stop drinking sugary sodas. Drink diet, you say? To me, diet tastes like I’m drinking bitter water. Unfortunately, I can’t do it. I’ve tried. But since I’m at home a lot of the day, I’m not in close proximity to a vending machine. In other words, if Nate or I don’t buy it at a store and bring it home, I don’t get soda. I miss Coke already. Alas.

3. Learn how to cook real food. One very great advantage of having a now (almost mobile) seven-month-old is that the last thing you want to do is go to a restaurant. What was a convenience to Nate and I has become a serious chore. Time to learn how to cook yummy, healthy food. Considering I have plenty of cookbooks and the time (relatively speaking), this should be manageable.

4. Read and write more. For more information on this, check out the “Book Club” category on the blog.

Well, I think I should just stop there. I may add more, but I’m hoping that I don’t delete any of these goals. One more day until I start. January 1 is Friday. Wish me luck!
